Fairfax building to be auctioned Dec. 28 for taxes

POSTED: November 28, 2009

FAIRFAX - A downtown Fairfax building that was restored several years ago will be sold "as is" at auction at 1:15 p.m., Monday, Dec. 28 in the Fairfax City Council Chamber.

Minnesota Valley Minerals bought the building located at 135 Park St. S. a number of years ago.

The firm restored parts of the building formerly known as Boyum's and Gumpolen's grocery and variety store.

Fairfax Mayor Kevin Schafer said the building is owned by the State of Minnesota since its former owners failed to pay taxes on it.

In Renville County, commercial property is forfeited after three years of property tax non-payment. Residential properties are forfeited after five years.

On Oct. 21, 2009, a handful of people appeared in the Renville County Courthouse in Olivia for a county-wide property tax forfeiture sale that included the downtown Fairfax building.

There were no takers for the Fairfax store.
