Roy Melvin Moe was born on January 16, 1921 in Springfield, the son of Clarence M. and Maren (Sorum) Moe. Both his parents passed away before he turned ten. He attended School District 40 in Burnstown Township. Roy was baptized, confirmed and a lifetime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Springfield. Roy married Margaret Nachreiner on June 15, 1942 in Springfield. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was stationed in Hondo, TX. He worked as a Maintenance and Aerial Engineer working on AT7's and was discharged as a sergeant. His love of baseball started in the Burnstown league as catcher and later in the Air Force team. Roy and Margaret returned to Springfield after his discharge where he farmed. Along with his brother Norman, Roy started what is now called the Springfield Municipal Airport in the 1940s. He was an active member in the Republican political party. He and Margaret loved to dance and celebrated their 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries by entertaining family and friends with the Bobby Layne Nebraska Ballroom Dance Band. Roy was a member of the Flying Farmers, the Springfield American Legion, a FHA board member, and St. John's Lutheran Church where he served as Deacon, Trustee, President and Secretary of the congregation. Roy enjoyed flying, the Minnesota Twins, and traveling to many different countries.
