November 13, 2009
The Journal

A New Ulm man sustained facial and eye injuries in a motor vehicle accident Thursday evening at CSAH 13 North of CSAH 22 in Cottonwood Township.

Fred Gareis, 50, 1022 S. State St., New Ulm, was northbound in a 2004 Ford Taurus on CSAH 13 when it met a southbound truck with a loose swinging web strap with a hook or buckle attached. The hook or object smashed through the windshield, hooked into the dash and tore out a large piece of the dash before exiting through the entry hole of the windshield, according to information from the Brown County Sheriff.

A length of the heavy web strap was found at the scene where it had apparently been torn loose.

Gareis's wife and daughter were uninjured, other than that Sandy Gareis was hit in the upper arm by the object.

Fred Gareis was transported by the New Ulm Ambulance to the New Ulm Medical Center for facial injuries and glass in his eyes.

There was extensive damage to the Gareis vehicle

The incident is under investigation by the Brown County Sheriff's Office.

Anyone with any information about the incident is urged to contact the Sheriff's Office.
