Another way to fight buckthorn
POSTED: October 28, 2009
To the editor:
As opposed to digging out the roots, an easier way to remove European Buckthorn was once suggested to me by Greg Johnson, the chief forester at the Department of Natural Resources' Regional Headquarters here in New Ulm.
Using pruning shears or a saw, you first cut off the tree as flush to the ground as possible. You then immediately spray the "stump" with a liberal dose of Roundup. Although effective only during the growing season when the sap is running, this method can be used to remove any unwanted shrub or tree - such as Missouri Gooseberry or Boxelder.
Based upon my own personal experience, this method works.
