Figures don’t add up on health care
Speaking of cynicism, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has earned a large measure of it.
Last week Pelosi said a health care bill in the House carried a $1 trillion price tag. Then, it was pointed out that $1 trillion would force the government to engage in more deficit spending - as President Barack Obama has ruled out for health care.
Pelosi, D-Calif., adapted quickly. The $1 trillion figure is for health care coverage to be offered under the bill, she claimed. The measure's cost would be only $900 billion "and will not add a dime to the deficit," she elaborated.
So Pelosi is saying that somehow, the government will spend $900 billion to provide $1 trillion in health care coverage. That simply doesn't add up.
Unfortunately, such magic tricks with numbers have been typical of liberals' claims in regard to health care legislation - and some Americans believe them. It's enough to make a thoughtful person sick.

Shadow, it won't be 'affordable health care' just because the government is giving it away or mandating its operation. We need reform, but the start of it is to eliminate the mountain of government restrictions on insurance companies. Add to that the tort reform which would limit malpractice lawsuits.
