Drive carefully near schools

POSTED: October 29, 2009

To the editor:

I would like to ask anyone who drives near Jefferson Elementary School in New Ulm to please be more careful before and after school.

I cross AT THE CROSSWALK by Payne St and 2nd South to pick up my son from Jefferson School. On both Thursday and Friday afternoon of this week, I was almost hit by not only one car, but two.

I hate to think about my child or any other child being hit by someone who doesn't pay attention, doesn't care or is in such a big hurry.

Most people in this area of town at this time of day are probably there for the same reason...for a child. Let's try to keep their safety in mind. Thank you.

I think it would be safer if NO ONE was allowed to park or drive on payne street by the school to pick up there child, it goes really smoothly in the mornings they should have the same rules in the afternoon. There is no reason one can not walk a block to pick up their child. And I agree it is like a rat race down there and yes they should have more crossing gaurds. They should have 6, 2 for each crosswalk. I litterally got yelled at when I used the crosswalk, because it was not the one with the crossing gaurds, well if you don't want me to use the CROSSWALK then don't make one.

It is great the you cross at the crosswalk, not everyone does. When I drive by the high school students are crossing the road not always at the cross walk but all other areas so it is really hard sometimes to watch for everyone darting out between traffic. I think it woul dbe safer if there were more crossing guards, since there are only 2 right now.
