Global warming impact looms

POSTED: October 22, 2009

To the editor:

Climate change poses an unprecedented threat to wildlife - changing, shrinking and destroying habitat, forcing wildlife to migrate or adapt, or even threatening their very existence.

The Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change warns that if we don't take strong action to address global warming soon, 20-30 percent of the world's plant and animal species will be at increased risk of extinction by 2050. Reducing carbon emissions although helpful is not enough. Any comprehensive climate and energy legislation must dedicate five percent of the funding generated to safeguarding fish and wildlife and the natural resources on which we all rely. Our senators should know that their constituents expect nothing less.

Dr. Victor Khayat, MD

New Ulm

LL, I agree. It is inconsistent to believe the world is continually evolving, and then want to attempt to stop natural changes to the climate and the Earth. And to ask for funding is ludicrous!

This is a different issue than being good stewards of the land and taking care of our natural resources.

Usually the same people that tout global warming are the ones who are diehard evolutionists....so therefore they should be consistent. According to evolution, animals evolve in accordance with their surroundings. So I was just following that path of reason.

All the politically correct folks that are screaming about how Americans are messing up the climate with all our pollution, never say anything about the fact that China is the country that is doing the most damage. My husband had to go there to train in his replacement when his job was lost to an engineer over there, and he couldn't even see the blue sky.

LibertyLady...YOU were the one saying that Polar Bears should evolve...as if ANYTHING has significantly evolved in the last 2000 years. I never called you uneducated, but if you want to be taken seriously, comments like that won't help your case. Were you being sarcastic, then that may be a different story.

At last check, the polar bears have been doing quite well in the last decade. Their numbers are rising. Climate concerns using their plight are misguided and possibly an attempt to manipulate.

Sorry, Mike. I apologize. I didn't read all the comments before I posted my comments. As I said, I am concerned about the environment. It should NOT be a political issue, but unfortunately it has become one. I guess I lean a little to the conservative side, and every once in a while I post my comments on this site. I have been bashed with mean words and comments by quite a few liberals in the past, so I just expect it whenever I take a stand. I believe in freedom of speech, so I don't mind this as long as there is an educated response in defense of their comments. I think there is too much confilct in America between the left and the right. I wish it wasn't that way. By the way...thanks for your service to our country. I have the highest respect for the military.

I am not a liberal, on the contrary most of my views lean toward conservative. LibertyLady insulted the doctor for giving an honest opinion and his concern for the risks to our environment. Read the previous comments. Why do you link someone who is concerned with the environment as a socialist. Regardless of what your political beliefs are, the environement is and has been under attack. You can be part of the solution or the problem. By the way, libertylady have you sacrificed for your liberty? I have served 8 years in the Army and have been on numerous deployments with men and women who have fought for your liberty. I will fight to help educate the uneducated like you just as I foought the enemeies of the US.

I am an observer. Read the educated and intelligent response by LibertyLady. She's not "bashing anybody"...just making her point. I'm not taking sides, but why is it that it seems all liberals can do is make rude comments when they hear something the don't want to hear? Just listen! Check it out! Yes, we can do things to help the environment. I agree! But I notice, too, that it IS being used as a political farce...a scare tactic used by socialism. It's very obvious. There...I took my stand. Now here come the insults...

Mike, Mike, Mike,

Getting a little abrasive aren't we? Being good stewards of what we've been give is one thing, but blaming human activity for things that are way beyond our control is another.... such as climate change!

Libertylady, Not everything has to have politics asociated with it. We can not even eat certain fish without risk of mercury poisoning. We have caused landscape changes by knocking down millons of acres of forest. We treat animals like property instead of living creatures. We should be stewards of the environment and the planet. I completely agree with you Middleclassworker. LibertyLady, why dont you hold your breath forever, it would do the planet good.

Global warming is the most prominent form of mass hysteria raging across the world today. Kids in school these days are almost afraid to breathe, because it will "increase their carbon footprint." It’s quite amazing, the way carbon, the element all life is based on, has replaced plutonium as the enemy-element. It’s as if the chattering classes are making war on the periodic table of the elements.

Meanwhile, they’ve been changing the cry from "global warming" to "climate change" because there’s so little evidence there’s actually any warming going on. I believe that as little as a decade from now, global warming will be recognized as one of the greatest swindles in world history. It has so little scientific basis, it can only rationally be considered a political scam.

Mike and Middleclass,

I'm educated.... Ironically the world's foremost expert on Atmospheric Physics, MIT Professor Dr. Richard Lindzen has not participated in this charade (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). He is a vigorous and vocal critic of this IPCC hype. Many others have realized that this farce was nothing more than a crude attempt to implement socialism and control of the economy via environmental regulation based on mendacious, uncritical, and fundamentally wrong interpretations of this "science."

Good one, Shadow! I would assume, then, that God ANSWERED the prayers of all the Steeler fans yesterday. It just doesn't work that way. Pray to win the lottery and then tell me again how "God let you down when you didn't win". God dNature runs it's course. I agree that we should all take measures now to curb pollution and clean up the air. We should do all we can. I've had plenty of worthwhle paryers answered in my life. I believe in God and prayer. In my eyes, though, nature will also help resolve this problem. Keep an eye on the polar caps. I believe they'll come back.

Global warming or not, it is only right to leave this world cleaner than we were born into it. It is about having clean air, clean rivers and lakes, oceans that are well-stocked and not over harvested. We need to preserve the natural rainforests...it will take many lifetimes, if ever, to get any of that back. If we all keep destroying this earth, there will be nothing left. It's really sad, Liberty Lady, that you don't care at all that polar bears may be totally wiped off the face of the earth in a matter of years. How selfish.

Dr. Khayat is 100% correct. We are causing harm to our environment and must take action before we see many species become extinct. "God" has not caused the pollution of our rivers and Oceans, and it is up to us not God to fix the problem. As for LibertyLady, I think you need to evolve a little and get an education.

This is a totally "not political" statement, so please don't take it wrong. I have watched many science reports on TV and also read many articles on global warming. According to what I've read in science magazines we are going through a very natural climate change. This is a normal cycle and will correct itself. At the same time we should be careful and make an effort to curb. The issue of climate shouldn't be a political issue...it affects everyone and we should put our faith in God to resolve it.

Yea, those polar bears up there simply need to EVOLVE!!!! What's the problem.....

Some people believe in the evolution of the Earth. Isn't that what global warming basically is? The natural course of events which change the environment?... God always provides as is needed... (not a REPUBLICAN sentiment...)
