Hanska - Melvin T. Miller, 85, of New Ulm, formerly of Hanska, died Thursday, August 27, 2009 at the St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 31 at Zion Lutheran Church in Hanska with Rev. Aaron Suomala Folkerds officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be 2:00 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Schmucker Funeral Service in Hanska and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Melvin Theodore John Miller, the son of Willie and Marie (Johnson) Miller, was born April 21, 1924 in Riverdale Township, Watonwan County. The family lived in Riverdale and Madelia Townships until moving to Linden Township, Brown County in 1936. He attended country school and Hanska High School. Melvin was united in marriage to Arlene Anderson May 15, 1950 in Hanska. They made their home and farmed in rural Hanska for over 50 years. He also farmed in North Dakota for several years. Melvin did custom work for farmers all his life. He had a feed grinding business, and did corn shelling and hauling. He also did custom harvesting and plowing for many years. In addition to his farm work, he hauled hogs and cattle for many years as well. He loved to work for and with farmers and was proud of his beef cattle herds. Melvin and Arlene moved to New Ulm in 2004. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, serving as trustee and usher. He was active in various farm groups and was a member of the former Hanska Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife Arlene of New Ulm; daughters Julie Miller and Dorene Miller of Highlands Ranch, CO; son David Miller of Hanska; two grandchildren Andrew and Jennifer Miller; sister Evelyn Amundson of Aurora, CO; brother Norman Miller of Hanska; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Arden Amundson of Aurora, CO, Helen Miller of Hanska, Jean and Wendell German of Richfield, Les and Patti Anderson of Burnsville, Warren and Garnett Anderson of Maple Grove; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
