NEW ULM - A Hanska family - Chantel, Jazmyne and Brok Miller - received the top honors at the 4-H Swine show held Saturday morning at the Brown County Fairgrounds.
Chantel and Jazmyne Miller, who are 17-year old twin sisters, each went home with champion awards. Their younger brother, Brok, who is 14 years old, also took home a champion placing for market gilts, a reserve champion in market barrows and a champion in the intermediate show person category. Jazmyne received a champion ribbon in market barrows and also a champion for senior swine show person. Chantel won the champion placing for breeding gilts and a reserve champion for senior swine show person.
The past year in preparation for the 4-H Swine Show "has been an up and down roller coaster ride," Chantel said.
Their pigs eat a feed "mash" (feed and water) four times per day. The pigs also get walked down the road, said Chantel.
The Miller teens work with their pigs for about an hour every day.
"We work them with stick to stay away from fences," said Chantel.
It is important that the pigs learn to work with the sticks that they use during the swine show.
The Millers said they are "independents," which means they are not a member of a certain club.
This is the second year the Millers have shown at the Brown County Free Fair. They brought seven pigs to this year's fair, Chantel said.
