NEW ULM - Ed Hayes claims that when he read his horoscope Monday morning, good things were in store for him.

Hayes was the captain of the the five-man team, along with Paul Furth, Mike Bode, Ernie Kretsch and John Mowan came away the winners of the third annual B&L Golf Classic with a team score of 122 at the New Ulm Country Club.

They beat the next team of Todd McKeeth, Jim Schmidt, Jon Koeckeritz, Billy Thomas and Tony Hudson by five (127).

"It was one of those days where I woke up and I read the horoscope and I had a five-star horoscope," Hayes said. "That's what it was."

While the good luck certainly helped out with Hayes and company, he was quick to add that his team did well together and played good golf when it needed to.

"We had a great team and we had our lead and coach [Paul] Furth here," said Hayes, who was captain of the team. "It was just good karma. Everyone was loose and we had a lot of fun out there and we didn't make any bogeys. Everything fell into place."

Hayes said he competed in the Kaiserhoff Classic for 10 years and three years in the B&L Tournament that took over after the Kaiserhoff tournament discontinued. It's the first time he's been on the winning team of either tournament and Kretsch said it was the second time for him.

Meanwhile, McKeeth's team also had a good day but fell just short of the claiming first.

"We got off to just a little bit of a sluggish start, but when we hit hole 15, that kind of lit us up," McKeeth said. "We started playing a little better and we were a little more confident. Everybody played a good part."

Finishing third with a score of 128 was the team of Randy Paa, Mike Wise, Tony Sowder, Rollo Lentz and Todgeo Meinert. Steve Prunty, Bill Fenske, Dean Risius, Carl Paa and Eric Dulka were fourth with a score of 129 and Chuck Hansen, Jerry Boddy, Duane Ristau, Dallas Loverude and Kevin Bassett were fifth with a team score of 130.

Finishing sixth was Brad Johannes, Randy Cole, Tony D'Aquisto, Bill Koeckeritz and Gary Kruggel with a team score of 131 and Jason Wieland, Brian O'Neill, Tim Hoscheit, Pat Kneefe and Jim Kretsch were seventh with a score of 131.

Jeff Lindermann, Dean Warta, Don Olson, Mert Gustad and Randy Wiltscheck were eighth with a 132.
