Four hour driving class offered
NEW ULM - CAST - Community And Seniors Together (a United Way Agency), Dist. 88 Community Education andAARP will sponsor a four-hour refresher 55 Alive Safety Driving course from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24 at the New Ulm Community Center.
Students must have taken the eight-hour class prior to enrolling in a refresher course. The class is $15 and payable the day of class but you must register by calling 354-3212. Classes fill quickly, but are offered monthly so do not delay calling in your registration.
CAST to host local attorneys to assist seniors with legal issues
NEW ULM - Questions about Legal Issues? Legal Counseling, on a one-to-one basis, is offered at at 11 am. June 18 at the New Ulm Community Center.
CAST will host local attorneys to assist Senior Citizens with concerns and questions. There are no fees for this counseling and clients are seen on a first-come, first-serve basis.
CAST offers new programs for Seniors
NEW ULM - CAST (Community and Seniors Together) will be offering new opportunities for Seniors in 2009.
"Biking Club" Will begin 8:20 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10. CAST invites folks interested in forming a biking club to meet at the Community Center. Call 354-3212 if you are interested but cannot attend the first meeting.
"Table Tennis" will also be offered so bring a friend or pick up a partner and play some Ping Pong at the Community Center. The table will be ready each Tuesday and Thursday morning, between 8-10 a.m. Afternoon hours may be extended if additional time is needed.
"Nintendo Wii Sports" each Tuesday and Thursday, beginning June 11 from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Bowling, tennis, baseball are just a few of the options Senior will be trying. at the Senior Center. Exercise with friends while sitting or standing.

Senior Birthday Party planned
NEW ULM -LSS Senior Nutrition. and CAST - Community And Seniors Together (a United Way Agency) will sponsor a birthday party at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 17 at the Community Center, 600 N. German.
Seniors, if you are celebrating a birthday this month the Senior Center welcomes you to celebrate with other seniors and friends. Entertainment is provided by Jan & Jean, the Country Gals Reservations can be made by calling 3 59-2243.
Free blood pressure checks offered
NEW ULM - CAST (Community And Seniors Together) will sponsor Brown County Public Health Nursing Service for blood pressure checks with the nurses beginning at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 8. These services are provided free at the Community Center, 600 N. German, on a walk-in basis.
Health Insurance Counseling offered
NEW ULM - CAST - Community And Seniors Together (a United Way Agency) will sponsor Sally Webster from Minnesota River Area Agency on Aging Health insurance Counseling at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 18.
These services are provided free at the Senior Center - 600 N. German or in your home if mobility is a problem. Information, education, counseling and one-to-one assistance for Medicare beneficiaries for issues related to medicare, insurance, public benefit programs and long term care insurance will be provided. Also, questions answered on Medicare and insurance payments or if forms need to be filed or questions about purchasing insurance. If you have questions call 354-3212 or 1-800-333-2433.
King of Kraut contest set June 13
NEW ULM - Bavarian Blast will be looking for challengers to dethrone "Dave, The Dumpling" Christiansen at a sauerkraut eating contest.
The person that can eat one pound of sauerkraut the fastest will represent New Ulm against the Henderson and Belle Plaine's Champions at Bavarian Blast this summer.
The "King of Kraut" contest will be held Saturday, June 13 at the B&L Bar. This Fundraiser for Bavarian Blast will feature music by the Northside Dutchmen from 3-7 p.m. Food will be available. The contest will be at 5:30 p.m. with the crowning to be followed immediately afterward. Please send us your challengers to become the "Saltan of Cabbage" from New Ulm. Registration will close at 5 p.m. the day of the event.

Twilight Meeting, judging and hog roast event set
GAYLORD - Elginvue Farms, Kenn Mueller, and the Sibley County Holstein Assn. will be hosting a Twilight Meeting on Thursday, June 11.
The evening will start at 6:30 p.m. with hoof trimming and clipping demonstrations. A cattle judging contest will take place at 7:30 p.m. with youth, women and men's divisions. A free hog roast will immediately follow the judging contest. The evening will conclude with socializing and door prizes.
Elginvue Farms is located east of Gaylord and south of Arlington on Minnesota State Hwy. 19. Come for the demonstrations, come for the judging contest, come for the free hog roast, or come just to see the quality cattle. Everyone is welcome to attend. Identity Theft Chamber's Hot Topics Breakfast
NEW ULM - Identity fraud is digging deep into business and consumer pockets and is America's fastest growing crime. More than $48 billion was lost in the past fiscal year by financial institutions and businesses; individuals lost an estimated $5 billion.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is the lead agency in investigating incidents of identity theft. Jeff Long, U.S. Postal Inspector, will share ways to reduce the risk of identity theft for our businesses and individuals at the next Hot Topics Breakfast, 7:30 a.m. on Friday, June 12. 75th Anniversary Pow Wow set in Mountain Lake
MOUNTAIN LAKE - The 75th Anniversary Pow Wow will be held from Friday, June 12 through Tuesday, June 16 in Mountain Lake.
Many events are planned over these days: 7 p.m. Friday, June 12 Miss Mountain Lake pageant held at the High School auditorium, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 13 Verenike Luncheon at Heritage Village with a program to follow (tickets at City Hall). In the afternoon on Saturday there will be baseball games, bean bag contest, firemen's water fight and street dance.
On Sunday the highlights include: at 7 a.m. a pancake feed in city park, 10 a.m. worship service in city park, 2:30 p.m. registration for 36th annual road race, 5:30 p.m. Kiddie Parade, 6 p.m. antique car parade and show on 3rd Ave. and 7 p.m. worship service at city park band shelter.
On Monday the main events include: 12 p.m. petting zoo, 2 p.m. midway opens, 7 p.m. grand parade on third Ave. and 9 p.m. marching band performance in city park.
Tuesday's events include: 1-3 p.m. Cinder-Joe the Clown in City Park, 3 p.m. kids' pedal pull, and at 6 p.m. pie eating contest.
On Saturday June 27 beginning at 10 a.m. the Brad Behrends Memorial golf tournament will be held at Mountain Lake Golf Course.

Brain Injury Support Group to hold meeting
NEW ULM - The New Ulm Area Brain Injury Support Group will meets on the first Saturday of every month in the conference room of theOakHillsLivingCenterin New Ulm.

NUMOSS to hold open mic on June 12
NEW ULM - The New Ulm Musicians' Open Stage Society (NUMOSS) will hold its monthly open mic beginning at 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 12 at Smiley's Tavern instead of on the first Friday of the month.
Fund-raiser set for Heather Rich & Family
NEW ULM - A fund-raiser will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 6 in the Hy-Vee Parking lot.
A meal of brats, hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, beans, pop and water will be served. Free-will donations will help the Rich family cover the costs of traveling expenses, medical bills and lost wages.
Heather Rich, an employee at Hy-Vee was diagnosed with Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) 17 years ago. With age, the risk of rupture and bleeding increases significantly. This can cause severe and often fatal strokes. On May 15, Rich underwent extensive surgery at the Mayo Clinic.
NU Municipal Band to hold concert series
NEW ULM - The New Ulm Municipal Band will be holding the a series of outdoor concerts in German Park this summer.
Concerts will be held: 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, 7-8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 22 and 7-8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29.
The New Ulm Municipal Band plays marches, old standards, Broadway melodies, patriotic songs, music from Germany and more. The band has been working up new music for this year. In case of inclement weather for any outdoor concert, the event will be held in the New Ulm Community Center. People should tune into KNUJ to listen to the announcement.
Journey through the Minnesota River Valley Scenic Byway event set
FAIRFAX - The public is invited to join Ron Bolduan and take a photographic journey on the Minnesota River Valley Scenic Byway.
Bolduan will share his photos and stories about the nature, people and history of the 287-mile byway beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 7 at the Fort Ridgely commissary AV room. Bolduan's quest to inform Minnesota residents of the treasure of the Minnesota River. The program is free to the public. No State Park sticker is required on the open house Sunday at all Minnesota State Parks.
4-H & Dairy Day planned
WEST NEWTON - On Sunday, June 7 the West Newton 4-H Club will be showing what 4-H is all about with displays of the projects. The 4-H and Dairy Day event will be held from 1-4 p.m. at the Harkin Store.
The Harkin Store will honor the dairy industry by serving different types of dairy products. Sylvia Reinhardt will be making homemade ice cream.
The 1870s Harkin Store is located nine miles northwest of New Ulm on Nicollet County Road 21. It is operated by the Nicollet County Historical Society. For more information call 507-354-8666
Firearms safety class registration set
NEW ULM - Firearms Safety Class registration is planned 6-8 p.m. on Monday, June 8 or Tuesday, June 9 at the Izaak Walton Buidling in the Brown Co. Fairgrounds.

Marionettes and Magic Show set
NEW ULM -Jim Jayes's Marionettes and Magic Show will be held 3 - 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, June 9 at the New Ulm Community Center (600 N. German St.)
The event is sponsored by the New Ulm Public Library. Everyone is invited to this free event. Jim Jayes brings his marionettes and some magic. Be prepared to join in the fun because all ages will enjoy this program.
Lions Club seeks donations
NEW ULM -The Lions Club of New Ulm will join with other Lions from across the state of Minnesota, Manitoba and NW Ontario in an attempt to gather the most eyeglasses ever collected in one month. The goal is to collect 100,000 used eyeglasses.
Channel 5 Eyewitness News is partnering with the Lions to get retailers across the area to help collect eyeglasses. The eyeglasses will be recycled and then given to people in developing countries. The goal is to collect the glasses during the month of June and turn them in at the Lions International Convention in Minneapolis in July.
The total number of eyeglasses collected will be announced during the International Convention. An estimated 20,000 Lions will descend on Minneapolis representing 205 countries in which Lions are active. Please look for those discarded glasses and make sure the Lions get them in June.
Locally, glasses may be placed in the Lions Eye Glass collectione. boxes at banks in New Ulm and at the Windschitl Dentistry Office.
NU Food Shelf to hold waffle fundraiser
NEW ULM - The New Ulm Food Shelf is sponsoring a Dad's Belgian Waffles breakfast as a fundraiser Sunday, June 7, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church social hall in New Ulm.
Serving hours are 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Prices are $6 for an adult, $4 for children 5 to 12 and free for children under five years old.
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is providing a 50 percent matching grant up to $500.
Prairie Fire Children's theater show set
NEW ULM - Parents of third through 9th graders are encouraged to register their children for this summer's Prairie Fire Children's Theatre Production of 'Peter Pan' by calling Healthy Communities/Healthy Youth at 354-8632.
The dates are July 13-18 and there is no cost to participate.
This is an opportunity for students to experience live theatre. They will work with professional actors to rehearse and perform the classic tale of Peter Pan for a live audience.
The registration deadline is July 10 and the production is sponsored by Healthy Communities/Healthy Youth of Brown County with financial support from 3M, United Way of the Brown County Area and ISD #88 Community Services.
Summer Organ Recital Series planned
MANKATO - The Sioux Trails Chapter of the American Guild of Organists invites all to attend its annual Summer Organ Recital Series, held at 12 p.m. noon on Tuesdays, beginning June 9 and concluding Aug. 18.
This long-standing tradition features performers from the Sioux Trails Chapter, as well as friends from other chapters or locales.
The series will be held this year at Bethlehem Lutheran, 720 S. 2nd Street in downtown Mankato. Recitalists will perform on the 31 rank, two manual Holtkamp organ located in full sight of the audience, on the north side of the chancel.
Recitals are one-half hour long and open and free to all. New Ulm resident Dr. Ames Anderson will be the first recitalist of the season, performing works by Handel, Mendelssohn, and Bach.
