NEW ULM - In what was possibly billed as the Tomahawk Conference game of the year, Minnesota Valley Lutheran got out of the gates and cruised to an 83-58 Tomahawk Conference boys basketball win Tuesday.
The win avenged an earlier loss to the Cougars (17-2, 13-1) and stopped their 17-game winning streak.
The Chargers grabbed a 16-6 lead over the Cougars on a steal and basket by Brandon Smith and then went up 18-6, prompting a timeout by CM/C coach Keith Klawitter.

"We were definitely ready to play and we wanted to come out and run the floor," MVL's Galen Holzhueter said. Holzhueter led all scorers with 22 points. "We passed well, and got them tired and we just kept going.
Tyler Pendleton led the Cougars with 20 points.
"Pendleton obviously is a big scorer, so we keyed on him," Holzhueter said. "We just played really good help defense and team defense."
The Cougars cut the deficit to 20-9 on a Pendleton 3 with 12:26 left in the first half, but the Chargers continued to run and gun, taking a 39-19 lead on a Bryce Krohn 3 and a 49-20 lead into the locker room.
"It's what they always do, and we knew they were going to try to do that, and we allowed them to," Klawitter said.
The Cougars were able to hit some 3s in the second half, but by then the damage was done. Nine different MVL players scored, and after Holzhueter, Smith had 14 points and six assists and Josh Danell had 12 points and six rebounds.
In the end, the final result surprised even Holzhueter.
"I definitely was expecting a closer game than what it was," Holzhueter said. "We shot really well, and they didn't shoot as well. Sometimes that's going to happen."
MVL (20-1, 14-1) is at New Ulm Cathedral Friday and the Cougars are at St. James Thursday for a nonconference battle before hosting Sleepy Eye in Comfrey Friday night.
