MANKATO Valeria Gerth, 95, of Mankato and formerly of New Ulm, died Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at the Mankato House Health Care Center in Mankato.
Funeral service will be 11:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Rev. Joyce Tollefson Capp officiating. Burial will follow in the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Schmucker Funeral Service of New Ulm is handling the arrangements.
Valeria Mildred Missling, the daughter of Gustav and Anna (Graf) Missling, was born May 2, 1913 in Amboy Township, Cottonwood County. She attended country school. She had a strong love for her father and was "Daddy's Girl." Valeria loved to dance in her youth. She was united in marriage to Harold Gerth on September 18, 1935 at St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Jeffers. Together, they farmed near Sanborn until 1945 when they moved into town. Valeria and Harold also lived in Lamberton, Slayton, Windom, Colorado Springs, CO, and Sioux Falls, SD before retiring and moving to New Ulm in 1972. Harold died September 11, 2006.
Valeria was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in New Ulm and a former member of Zion Lutheran Church in Sanborn. Church was very important to her. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, baking bread, and braiding rugs. She enjoyed sightseeing, traveling and attending Oktoberfest in New Ulm. She was very proud of her German heritage. Valeria's sense of humor will be missed. She was a homemaker all her married life and was also involved in babysitting for friends and neighbors. Valeria moved to assisted living at Pathstone Living (formerly Sibley Manor) in Mankato. She entered the Mankato House Health Care Center on January 31, 2008.
Survivors include her sister Venita Krasomil of Glendale, AZ; sister-in-law Letha Missling of Windom; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son Duane and brothers Harold, Earl, Lawrence and Melvin.
