NEW ULM - For the first 12 seconds of Saturday's boys soccer game, the New Ulm Eagles were looking like they were going to get some redemption from a 2-1 loss earlier in the season to Willmar.
But the Cardinals didn't get flustered by a quick New Ulm score, and got back into the game and eventually defeated the Eagles 2-1 at Mueller Field in Section 2A action. The loss ends New Ulm's season at 14-5.
"When you score [12] seconds in, it definitely gave us the energy to know that we could compete and win the game," New Ulm coach Jack Gronholz said. "It was kind of like the first game. We controlled the first part of the first half, and then we let them control it. We need to control it for 80 minutes to be successful"
Matti Miller, who was the hero in Tuesday's 3-2 win over Glencoe-Silver Lake when he scored the game-winning goal, carried that momentum over when he broke away on the opening play and scored just 12 seconds into the match. Dylan Smith got the assist.
But the Cardinals answered when Abdinasir Abdi scored at the 14:11 mark. Less than two minutes later, Trent Fader scored to put the Cardinals up 2-1, and New Ulm was unable to get much offense going. New Ulm finished with six shots on goal and Willmar had 12 shots.
