NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral’s Katelyn Schwartz had pretty much everything going for her Monday at the Section 2A, West Subsection golf meet at New Ulm Country Club.

Not only was the meet being played on her home course, but she was hitting the ball well in all facets of the game. She ended up winning the girls competition, shooting a season-best 91 to advance to the Section 2A meet next Tuesday in Fairmont.

“It seems like everything went the way I hoped it would go,” Schwartz said. “From my tee-off shots to my mid-range shots and then my short game.”

Schwartz was one of 10 individual qualifiers for the meet next week. She joins golfers from Cedar Mountain, which won with a team score of 421, and Nicollet, which was second with a 426 next week at Interlaken.

Besides the two teams and Schwartz, nine other golfers advanced. Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop advanced Britanny Haala (112), Paige Burgstahler (113) and Megan Kiecker (117). Minnesota Valley Lutheran’s Morgan Pitcher advances with a score of 109 and Cathedral had Kate Nosbush (115), Alison Schugel (119) and Marisa Waibel (119) advance.

Sleepy Eye’s Tricia Schumate (120) and Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Alexa Van Sickle (120) advanced on a playoff. Alexa Van Sickle and Schumate advanced on the playoff after Regina Van Sickle (120) of St. Mary’s failed to qualify for the meet.

As far as team scores, Cedar Mountain and Nicollet were far ahead of the competition. Cedar Mountain’s Laura Fox shot a 98 to finish second overall and Andrea Duck shot a 105 to finish fourth overall. Abby Smith finished with a 105, good for fifth overall, and Kelsey Serbus rounded out the Cougars’ score with a 113.

“We were stuck inside so long from just the weather, so it just kind of drags you down,” Cedar Mountain coach Joel Christiansen said. “But they’ve put their time in and done what we’ve asked of them, so it’s a good feeling.”

Nicollet was led by Alex Holmin, who shot a 100 to finish third overall. Holly Wenner (106), Kim Reed (106) and Jessica Johnston (114) rounded out the Raiders’ scoring.

Cathedral was third with a team score of 444 and GFW was next with a 466. Alexis Graunke was the fourth score to figure in GFW’s team score as she finished with a 124.

MVL was fifth with a 503. Sara Compart (121), Carly Retzlaff (127), and Jessica Albrecht (150) followed Pitcher’s 109. St. Mary’s was sixth overall, with the Van Sickle’s shooting a 120 and Mackenzie Schutz (130) and Annie Sellner (136) factoring in also. Sleepy Eye finished with a 518, and the Indians had Emily Curtis (125), Anna Ibberson (128), and Nikki Meidl (145) after Schumate’s score.
