St. Paul police officer shoots, injures suspect

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A St. Paul police SWAT member shot and injured a suspect after he fired at police during an arrest attempt at a home on St. Paul's East Side.

Authorities say the 37-year-old suspect was taken to a hospital with noncritical injuries after he was shot in the arm about 10 a.m. Friday. St. Paul Police Chief Tom Smith says no officers were injured.

The Star Tribune reports (http://strib.mn/1gHQeak ) SWAT team members went to the home to arrest the man, who was wanted in connection with an aggravated assault investigation. When police entered, the man raised a gun and fired. A SWAT member returned fire and struck the suspect.

The officer, a 15-year-veteran of the department, is on standard three-day leave. The suspect and the officer have not yet been identified.
