HOPKINS, Minn. (AP) — A transgender student has lost his bid to become homecoming king at Hopkins High School.
Jae Bates and his friend, Kaylee Grunseth, were running for homecoming king and queen. Kaylee created a Facebook page to get the school behind the couple.
But another couple received more votes from the student body Friday.
Bates was born female, but last year he started to make the transition to become a man. He changed his name, takes special hormones and plans to have surgery in March.
Bates tells KARE-TV (http://kare11.tv/19GQy7z ) that over the past couple of years, he's been able to find out who he is, "and the high school is so accepting of that."
And while Bates and his homecoming date did not win, he says, "I think we're really winners regardless."
