Do we need unionized college athletics?

July 8, 2014

National Labor Relations Board members have an opportunity to avoid making their agency look ridiculous, simple-minded and biased. They should take it....

OJC - so who should fund these wages being paid to college athletes? Increase tuition for kids going to college to get an actual education? Why not take this to the high school level as well , your philosophy would be the same there? I think they play for free or else have the Pro teams have minor leagues where they can go and play like baseball, college is for getting an education , tuition is already overpriced. If you want to play sports it should be for fun -wouldn't that be a neat idea?

housafire: Who cares if they graduate? People go to college to help them land a job / career. Is not playing for the the NBA, NFL, NHL, etc a legitimate career? Maybe its time colleges change to recognize this fact and consider sports to be a legitimate degree. After all, what's the difference between playing basketball for a job vs playing a part on broadway vs playing the oboe? Yet only two of these are considered "real" degrees....

Let them unionize. What will that truly do? If they don't get what they want, will they go on strike? Let them, let's see how high a draft pick goes that didn't play college because he whined about getting paid, so he didn't even play college ball. I understand letting scholarship kids get a job. (which they can't right now) I even understand paying the athletes. But seriously to unionize seems silly, because they don't have the cards to hold. The stud athletes have to play in order to get their BIG Pay day in the NFL, NBA, MLB, WNBA, etc..The colleges will just raise tuition to cover the costs unless NCAA or someone (other than the government) mandates a percentage of sport's revenue must be allocated to players.

I would have more sympathy if all of the college athletes on scholarship actually earned a degree. For the most part the graduation rates of these "student" athletes are abysmal.

They should absolutely be allowed to form unions. Millions upon millions are being made off the backs of these students, of which they get virtually nothing (outside of maybe a scholarship). At 18, you are considered an adult in this country, and you thus should be afforded all the rights and privileges that come with it....
