Wow..it's amazing I survived my childhood after naming and befriending the animals I have raised for food during my youth. My parents always made sure we understood that the animals would be used for food and we took pride in raising the animals because of that. I am happier knowing the animal I am eating was raised humanely from start to finish. Maybe more people would appreciate the food they eat day to day and stop wasting so much. You won't catch me throwing meat in the garbage as I know an animal died for that meal. Thank you Dominic for the nice letter!

@Sally. Thanks for the laugh today. I'm not sure what rock you climbed out from under, but you can go back now. Kids on farms have been taming and making animals their pets for centuries. I don't think you need to worry about how children handle the slaughter of their farm animals. It's been a way of life since the beginning of time. Those of you passing judgement on this kid, should be ashamed. He's simply asking the city to allow him to have chickens in the city limits. (He needs permission for this due to city ordinance.)He expresses how, he'll raise them, and what he plans to due with them. Sounds like the makings of a young entrepreneur. Good Luck Kiddo!

I'm sorry Dominic, but I think you still have a lot of learning to do about life, what friendship means and what goes into the slaughter of animals. Perhaps your parents should help you there. Planning to tame your chickens implies that they will be pets and I agree with yunosmart's sarcastic comment on here about that. We should not be teaching children that it is ok to befriend an animal and then slaughter it. (although we should always treat all animals, including slaughter bound livestock with kindness and respect)If its ok with a pet chicken, where do we draw the line? It is not acceptable with dogs in the USA. I agree that children should learn about where food comes from so that they will respect the animals that lose their lives for our food, but not become so desensitized that its acceptable to them to kill their pets when they are no longer "useful".

@Dominic what a great respectful letter. @yunosmart- shame on you for making fun of a 9 year old. This kid is learning a valuable lesson about where there food comes from. More kids need to understand that there is more that goes into food then just picking it up at the grocery store. Almost all 4H kids that I know make pets out of their animal projects even though they know they will be slaughered.

Yes, I love to kill and eat my pets when they get to be too old.
