Smoke, CO detectors are lifesavers

January 30, 2014

To the editor: The recent tragic loss of life in Springfield and the close call here in New Ulm has me wondering why everyone doesn't have at least one smoke detector and one carbon monoxide detector....

I agree with you guys, that's why this letter is a nice reminder to get out there and take care of each other. Buy your g-ma one as a gift, educate folks that aren't educated, etc. I just hate how it's always someone else's fault. If EVERYONE took care of their loved ones and friends, everyone would be taken care of (ok, almost everyone)!!

In many cities, the building officIals do an annual inspection of all rental properties. Not all people have the mental capacity our the knowledge to know what they are looking at. They might have an old smoke alarm that makes noise but still does not work. I would guess that many seniors do not have CO detectors unless someone helped them purchase one.

Integrity I wasn't even thinking of that situation. That is very sad . I was thinking of a complex where seniors live that should have them and don't. Inspections mean nothing, my opinion. You know what they say about opinions.

This situation was a rural situation where the landlord was the father, renting to the son & a friend. It's the law, but there were no inspections. Even in city limits w/ inspections, the inspectors check for a working smoke, but tenants MANY times take them down, pull the batteries, etc because they go off when cooking, chirp, etc. It still comes down to PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for yourself, no matter who's building your renting or if you own. Take responsibility for your own life - as the writer states in the letter.

why when its a Minnesota renters law that all landlords do have to provide these to their tenants they don't and get by with it?
