January 3, 2014

To the editor: In response to Jan Klein’s letter to the editor: It is nice to see that people are still engaging in Minnesota’s history and trying to understand its relationship to our lives today....

It doesn't matter what the Dakota people did before white invaders. Two wrongs do not make a right. Worry about your end. White's "settled" on a land that was not theirs. What whites did would not fly today and it shouldn't have flown then. Is that bias or truth?

One thing is clear....some ignorance will never be fixed, even in spite of the facts. Sad.

Mr. Mack wrote "The history of American expansion, manifest destiny, imperialism, exploitation and genocide in relation to the Dakota people cannot be so easily overlooked." Insert the word Dakota where you have American. Archeology shows ancestors of Dakota migrated up the Miss R. To Lake Mille Lacs. Called themselves Mdewakantonwans. As they grew and migrated in all directions they took the land from other tribes by force, wiping out enemies in large numbers. They took captives , integrated them in their tribe by force. Genocide. Survival of the fittest. Did Dakota ever pay Iowa Indians for the south half on Mn they took from them? The Dakota survived when other didn't.Tell how they survived. Simply tell history as it was instead of hiding facts. The video does not tell who the Dakota were. Those who hide history to further their agenda are not historians. Dave Fudally

In Response to Jason Mack letter.

Jason responded to Jan Klein's letter and her video assessment that it had a "pervasive bias" and "seemed like propaganda". I completely agree with everything in Jan's letter and that this video also was clearly agenda bias to not tell a factual historical viewpoint. I found statement after statement not factual or one sided. That does not tell the story as it was, but as some people want to spin history, so that it does not educate in truth, but only supports their viewpoint. Would you send a child to school to learn 1+1=3? NO! So why have people view a narrative that is not true in numerous statements, or well rounded and balanced? This video commits Dakota history genocide. This video commits Settler/Military/political history genocide. Simply tell the facts as it was. That is the history to be learned. See John LaBatte's review of this video on his Dakota War 1862 website for examples of inaccurate & unbalanced video state
