Target spends millions of dollars a year protecting its data. My employer services Target's data centers. It is unbelievable how many millions of dollars go through them every day.

To blame Target is blaming a victim in this. It isn't like they weren't trying to protect themselves. We don't blame a homeowner with an alarm system for someone breaking into their house.

Tooold is right. We do need to increase credit card security in this country. For starters, if more retailers would ask to see your card and valid ID, it would be a good start until more can be done.

The US should take a good lesson from this. We need better cards. Japan has a better card as probably the rest of the world does. Target is the second large company in the last five years that has been hacked. TJMAx Companies was that one. People blame Target--they are like any other company in the US. This is only the beginning. I heard on one newscast that the breach originated in southeast Asia. I have a friend who uses checks and her whole identity was stolen at a Walmart in Iowa. They did catch the person-part of a larger ring.
