I wanted to join the Lose It to Win It program, but I neither live nor work in New Ulm (a prerequisite to join). However, even though I live 25 miles away, much of my time is spent in New Ulm: shopping, receiving medical care, attending church, eating out, buying gas and groceries, attending the performing arts, cheering at sports games...the list goes on.

Perhaps the rules can be changed next time around...then perhaps their goal can be met.

Just like the park and rec programs, this program is largely funded by property tax dollars, which you do not pay to this city. I would suggest that in the future they allow non-residents to participate after paying the appropriate fee.

If I worked (but didn't live) in New Ulm, I could have joined.

Or did I misread the guidelines this year?

I thought most of the funding for this came from grants ? Not sure on it but I thought I had read that somewhere.

I think the reason they want to limit it is because the program is conducting research as people participate in various programs. Having a controlled demographic makes for better compiling data over a period of time. Also, the assumption is that people in a town like New Ulm were more likely to share the same eating habits etc. so they can better monitor results assuming a more homogenous pool of participants and control groups.

I guess to put it most simply, us Germans make for better lab rats...
