gophersrock1, Your information is correct in most cases. It is not the case in this situation. The school is being forced to join this conference because everyone in the SCC is joining it. All other sports are playing an east\west schedule meaning they will end up playing the same old scc teams. They will not have to travel more. Nothing changes for them. The only sport that has drastic changes is Hockey. It is an attempt by the southwest conference to gain hockey games at New Ulm's expense. ie losing JV hockey games and drasticly making their strength of schedule much weaker. I cant imagine what the cost is to send their JV team one direction and the varsity in another. It will probably double the cost.

A school joins a conference to help with scheduling for all their sports. It is an attempt to save transportation costs and help with scheduling. A consistent schedule allows students to have a better routine during their sport seasons, so they are not traveling all over the state on school nights. Many schools add tournaments, JV and non-conference games to their augment schedules if they need to. It is not the best solution, but cost effective in a time of limited budgets.
If I read this correctly, the hockey version of the Southern Plaines conference will gobble up more than half the regular season hockey schedule, and result in 10 fewer JV games, is this correct? Why are the boys and girls hockey teams being asked/forced to join this circuit? Are all the varsity teams in every sport going to belong to this new conference?
