Oh, and I learned something else. I was told that most sexual Catholic clergy abusers are not pedophiles. They are ephebophiles who engage in sexual activities with 13 to 17yr. olds. Who knew? I'm not sure if that information was suppose to make me feel better, but it sure as heck didn't. I am still a practicing Catholic, but this is a daily struggle for me.

All the religious Catholic clergy I have ever known have been good people (except, perhaps, for a few mean nuns). I keep my faith because of them & because of my parents who lived their Catholic faith to its fullest. However, I will never defend my Church's horrific criminal activities against innocent children.

In May of 2013, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops stated that around 6300 Catholic Clergy in the U.S. were credibly accused of sexually abusing minors from 1950 to 2012 (doesn't include the year 2003 -don't know why.) Of those numbers, around 2800 names of abusive clergy remain mum. The report states that there are approximately 17,000 known victims tied to these claims.

As MCW stated, I do agree that the majority of priests/Catholic clergy are good people, & I think he was being very kind in saying only a handful are bad.. It's actually quite a big handful & gets even bigger with the horrible cover-ups.

MCW is, also, correct in saying dioceses can be sue for their assets. Billions of dollars have been paid out, & several dioceses have declared bankruptcy, many right before trial dates.

Instead of tearing down the old diocese building they could use it as a prison for all the priest who committed rape.

Snivel, they can still be sued for their assets, both liquid and property assets. Will they have the money to pay the bank note when the building is complete? I am not bitter at all. I'm sure 99% of catholic priests are good people. It is unfortunate, though, that the church did not drag the few bad apples straight to the police instead of covering for them. This wouldn't have been an issue then.

MCW you are a very bitter person. The building of a new pastoral center has not a bit of bearing on this lawsuit. Fr Roney has been gone for years and might I say was around durig the years of cover-ups by former leaders in our church. I challenge you to investigate what the Catholic church does today to combat this terrible crime. Typical comments from someone who is always looking to be negative. The building of anything New in town is a positive and BTW, the money is there already.

Better get that new diocese built before you don't have the money to pay for it.

This just breaks my heart. I went all the way through NUACS (although it wasn't called that at the time) and I have nothing but fond memories of the clergy I came in contact with at school and in church. I know many others were not so fortunate. Sexual abuse is a horrible thing for a child to suffer regardless of who the abuser is - but when it's someone who claims to be a "man of God" that just makes it 100X worse.

The lawsuits are not about 'sexual misconduct' they are about SEXUAL ABUSE. The catholic church uses the minimizing word 'misconduct' the rest of the world uses the word RAPE
