Farmland has continued to shoot up in price. The Journal recently published a story on how farmers are buying golf courses, knocking over barns (for tillable land), plowing under CREP lands, and in one case even plowing up a pioneer cemetery.

There is good money in farming. Until we can convince the powers that be to shift from relying on property taxes to using income taxes, I see no reason for change.

I own the lot behind my house and sometimes I get all liquored up and go out back and blast off a few rounds from my over-n-under and git myself a rabbit or a possum or an errant squirrel. Makes a dang good stew as long as you don't bite down too hard on the buckshot.

Why should I suddenly have to pay more for using my land to feed my brood?

Don't seem fair.

Just askin'.

The county claims that the increases are due to people desiring and purchasing recreational woodland (meaning hunting, basically). So, if this is their reason, there should be sales in the area to support it over the past years. If there isn't comp's, then it sounds little dirty.

The value of the land has increased, thus the tax increases. When you someday sell the land, you will make far more money than you would once have.

I wonder, if you are using the land strictly for growing trees for firewood, wouldn't this be agriculture, or at least, shouldn't it be? Perhaps you should be taxed at a lower rate like farmland.
