May 12, 2013

To the editor: When I was running for the City Council last fall, I pledged that, if elected, I would have the city celebrating the Fourth of July with fireworks....

This idea has merit. I hope it is given setups consideration. My only concern is whether there are enough volunteers willing to pull this off. Even if the day full of events doesn't happen, fireworks could still go on. Movie in German park, followed by fireworks at Johnson field.

Sure New Ulm could "afford" fireworks. We just can't afford to have Mr. Larson as one of our councilors.

Accept New Ulm is all old geezers. They don't want fireworks, they're in bed by 9:00! Quit crying about it and make the drive to Mankato.

Wow, what a bunch of whiners, and living outside the city but offering to have us pay for your enjoyment. I like beer and New Ulm. 4th of July has always been mostly for the freeloaders who don't spend a dime on the fireworks and then "expect" it. 4th of July is about patriotism not fireworks. Most of you couldn't explain why fireworks are displayed on Independance Day or have ever participated in making this country a better place to live. Get a life for God's sake.

New Ulm is a different kind of place like no other city. They believe they are apart from any other and that's why when we moved from the metro 8 years ago we bought a house OUTSIDE city limits.

On the up side NU is the only city of its size to have their own brewery.

With the 5 cent gas tax increase coming people can't afford to drive to a different city to watch fireworks. New Ulm is the only city of its size to not have fireworks, also NU is the only city of its size to not have a 4 lane highway.NU is the only city of its size to not have a shoe store. Nu is the only city of its size to not have a decent place to eat fish and seafood or roast beef sandwiches.

I was always told they city quit fireworks when they got sued one year when a lady got hit by an errant firework. So, if someone falls off one of wagons, or the horses get spooked by someone shooting a now legal firecracker at them (and you know that would happen) and tramples someone, here you go again with lawsuits and lawyers. Liability claims have tanked more than one former pastime or activity in this sue-happy world.
