Highway 14 funding needed now

April 17, 2013

To the editor: I read with interest your April 13 front page article concerning the funding of Highway 14, and “that a status quo bill would keep putting people at risk due to Highway 14’s serious......

It will never get built. The road isn't that bad it's just the drivers that are.People are in such a rush to get to Mankato that they drive too fast and hence try to pass slower cars. Almost all the accidents on that stretch are caused by cars passing slower cars doing the speed limit. If the Highway Patrol would enforce the speed limit we wouldn't have cars going 70 and cars going 55.

Who drives 55 on ANY highway? Most people go between 60 and 62. If everyone would drive 60 (in good driving conditions), I think most people would tolerate them and not pass them.

There are other issues with 14: It has many blind spots where people do try to pass and you can't see the cars ahead because the road dips a LOT. Also, the eastbound lane coming out of Courtland should have a truck lane to get up the hill at the very least.

This is just the tip of the iceberg as to the highway's problems, but you can ask Kraft, 3M and other manufacturers on how the lack of a 4-lane route to the nearest interstate is impacting their future for providing jobs in this community.

It's my opinion that the DOT thinks that highway 14 is good enough for that part of Minnesota. They don't really care if it's built or not. They always find some reason not to fix it. The money is more important for some other project. The only way this gets done is if we do it ourselves and raise the money through donations and free labor.

I worked in Mankato for years. I did “a little over the speed limit” but was passed on the shoulder of the road by young people who had oncoming traffic, at one time a semi came flying up behind me and was going to pass on double yellows until he saw another semi coming towards us, the person driving that truck slowed down. I’ve had vehicles that aren’t capable of doing the speed limit pull out in front of me. I’ve driven on that road when there was bumper to bumper traffic, if we lived in the Twin Cities 14 would have been a 4 lane highway long ago.

Highway 14 is an oxcart path and is in great need of extensive work. There is good reason it is considered one of the most dangerous road in Minnesota.

I do have to commend the workers who clear Highway 14; they always do a great job!
