August 24, 2009 - Tessa Makepeace
Well I am in Germany! It has finally hit me that I am spending a year here but it is still crazy. Saying goodbye was hard but I am glad to be here. It is about 8:20 p.m. here and I haven’t slept yet except for a couple hours on the flight. It is 1:20 ish p.m. in Minnesota. Phew. I am going to bed after this. The flight was not bad at all and switching flights in Amsterdam was a little bit stressful but I made it. I met a girl from Norway who went to the USA as a foreign exchange student six years ago who was going back to Norway after visiting her host family in the U.S. Very cool. She was really nice and we talked for a while. I gave her my Rotary business card. I guess I should use those since I have them! The flight to Hannover was fast after that and then all the sudden I was like whaaaaaaattt..? I am here.
When I got to Hannover and got my luggage I went out to find my host family and there they were, standing there with this ENORMOUS sign saying Herzlichen Wilkommen Tessa. It is extremely cool. It’s the size of a fairly large blanket and it is painted on a sheet. It has the Statue of Liberty, a globe, and tourist sites in Berlin on it. It was a thoughtful thing for them to do. They are very, very nice people. We are getting along so well and they are incredibly friendly. I am lucky to have a host family as great as them! The nineteen year-old girl leaves for University tomorrow but she will come home on the weekends. It is good that I got to meet her. Her English is good too, although I am trying not to speak English. I was surprised that I remembered a lot o f my German. Right after I met their son, Hannes, we dropped him off at a week-long camp that has to do with practicing a certain kind of trumpet with his cousin Paul. They both seem frendly. I feel surprisingly comfortable here too, like I have been here a while. I already feel at home and this is going to be a wonderful year! I don’t know when I will be able to post this because I don’t have internet here but I will eventually. Anyone back home who is reading this, know I am thinking you and that I love you family and friends! Now off to bed: )
