Wheelage tax

To the editor:

Belated Holiday Greetings. As most of you know, NIcollet County as well as many other counties, levy a wheelage tax to help support our county roads.

I became aware of a problem, thanks to Mr. Schmit and Mr. Beranek, with regards to our residents who have non-Nicollet County addresses (New Ulm, Gibbon, Fairfax, Gaylord and LeSueur addresses). Sometimes the dealer making the vehicle registration is unsure of county borders. As example, they see a New Ulm address and assume the vehicle is parked in Brown County. Brown County would then receive the tax. People don’t like paying the wheelage tax but I am sure they would like to see it go to the correct county.

I visited with Sue at the Brown County License Bureau and she assured me her staff checks addresses and tries to make corrections. She also said the local dealers are good about this but mistakes can happen especially when vehicles are purchased out of our area.

When you get the renewal notice, please check that the right number is on the notice. Nicollet County is number 52. As a reminder, please use your local deputy registrar’s office for all your motor vehicle needs, including verifying your county is recorded correctly. Using your local offices ensures the filing fees stay at the county level. If you renew online or mail your registration to the state, the state keeps all filing fees. The local offices are helpful and generally problems are solved easier dealing with a real person.

I believe keeping our roads open and in good repair is one of the most important responsibilities counties have.
