Many sidewalks need fixing

To the editor:

New Ulm is overdue for a city-wide sidewalk inspection. Why? Because so many sidewalks are short of accepted safety standards These walks are dangerous for walkers, bikers, strollers and roller skaters.

On my walks around the city, I would estimate 20% of sidewalks have safety defects: one and two-inch dips at the seams, cracked sidewalks with lifted or sunken pieces, etc.

One day, I saw a teenage girl on roller skaters hit one of those sidewalk lips and she tumbled to the ground; fortunately, she suffered only skin bruises; however, that property owner could have been liable for an injury lawsuit.

If all the sidewalk replacements during the Broadway construction project this year are any indication, more than 20 percent of sidewalks in the city need attention.
