In response to Women’s Marchers letter

To the editor:

I would like to take the time to address the letter by Bonnie Howk that says the Women’s Marchers are not very ladylike. For us to not stomp on your rights and put our families first. I would like to give those who feel this way a reminder on what the Women’s Marches have been doing for over 100 years.

If it wasn’t for these women past and present, as women we wouldn’t have the right to vote, own land, have a job, retain the earnings from said job, and have our own bank accounts. We couldn’t get divorced from an abuser without losing everything but the clothes on our back including our kids. We wouldn’t have the right to education, the right to choose who we marry, the right to marry someone outside of our race, the right to be paid fairly for doing the same job, the right to a safe work environment, and the right to representation in the government. The right to choose with our bodies, the right to maternity leave, and most importantly the right to take time with a sick family member and not be fired for doing so.

Thanks to the efforts of these women over the years I was able to get an education through a Master’s Degree, participate in sports (one of which was wrestling), choose my major outside of the very few jobs that use to be available to women in the past, have my own bank account, retain my own earnings, buy my own car, buy and own a condo all with my own earnings, choose when to start a family, and not marry because I was 18 and it was time. I am able to vote and voice my opinion without fear. I was able to have 6 weeks from work after having a baby without fear of losing my job. Most importantly, I am free to make choices that best suit and support my family.

Most of the rights that have been hard fought were due to the Women’s Movement pushing along the change and court rulings in our favor. Just remember, thanks to them and the women before them, you are able to put your family first without fear of losing a job, your monies, and your safety. The Women’s Movement has been putting families first for over 100 years and I for one appreciate their time and hard work for every one of us.

To our future women’s leaders, I thank you and remember, “nevertheless she persisted”.
