Invest in safety of pedestrians on Broadway

To the editor:

I would encourage the New Ulm City council to apply for the grant for a rectangular rapid flashing beacon for the intersection of Broadway and 4th South Street. Broadway is a four-lane state highway, and it is difficult to cross all four lanes at any of the uncontrolled intersections. I would suggest the city councilors try to walk across, at an uncontrolled intersection. Use your vehicle if you want, it is not any easier. Now imagine you’re a 12-year-old, and in charge of the safety of your 8-year-old sibling.

Traffic on Broadway is heavy and fast, and anything that will slow the traffic should be welcomed. Broadway has four lanes going through retail and residential neighborhoods, numerous churches on Broadway, and a church and Lincoln Park a block away.

With the increase in walkers and bikers let us try to make it easier for people to move across this four-lane state highway. The added benefit is it will make it safer for vehicles by slowing the speed of the traffic. If the annual maintenance amounts to $2,500 a year, I would consider that a real bargain in making the busiest and fastest street in New Ulm safer  for pedestrians, bikers and vehicles.
