Thumbs Up/Down

Blessed silence

THUMBS DOWN: We have heard that 100 years ago, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the Armistice ending World War I went into effect, and the guns and artillery all along the front fell into blessed silence.

That is what we hope will happen on Tuesday, Nov. 6, as the polls close. The non-stop barrage of campaign advertising will suddenly cease, and we can watch television without someone telling us that the other side’s candidate is vile, corrupt and totally unfit to serve in the position they are running for. When both sides are claiming that, it’s no wonder we tend to have no confidence in government.

All we can say is, if those who are elected would spend as much time and energy trying to do something good for the state or the country as they do trying to slime their opponents, we’d be a lot better off.

Traffic dangers

THUMBS DOWN: For the second time in a little over a month, a pedestrian has been killed while crossing Broadway in New Ulm. The first instance happened in late September, in pre-dawn darkness. The second, just this Thursday, happened in the afternoon, in broad daylight.

We urge motorists and pedestrians, and bicycle riders as well, to take care when traveling our busiest street. Pedestrians, cross at corners, preferably at an intersection with a traffic light. Wait for the a break in traffic. Don’t assume you will be granted the right of way in the crosswalk, even though state law says you have it.

Motorists, please drive carefully. Don’t be in a rush and don’t take your eyes off the road. A pedestrian can step off the curb in a heartbeat. Don’t let yourself be distracted by a cell phone, a sip of coffee, a cigarette or anything else.

We don’t want any more news reports of this kind.
