Beussman has earned another term

The election for New Ulm Mayor presents citizens with a difficult choice. In Robert Beussman and Kathleen Backer, voters have two excellent candidates willing and able to do the job of mayor. Both, we feel, would do an excellent job. So who should be elected?

As one of only two city offices elected by all the citizens of New Ulm, the position of mayor carries a certain weight that may not be evident in the duties of the office as spelled out in the city charter. The mayor is an ex-officio member of the city council, lacking the power to vote, but as a representative of all the people in the city, the mayor’s input and advice should be sought after and considered.

The mayor often represents the city in ceremonial situations and acts as an ambassador to other communities. The mayor may also represent the city on other outside boards and organizations. The Highway 14 Partnership is a prime example of that.

Both candidates are capable of providing calm, considered advice. Both are good at listening to people. Both would represent New Ulm well in ceremonial situations, and be eloquent advocates for the city in intergovernmental assignments.

In our view, it comes down to this. Mayor Beussman has been doing the job and doing it well. He has devoted his time and energy to the city and its people. He has been a strong representative, especially in the long battle to get the state to start doing something about Highway 14.

With no disrespect to Backer, we think the voters of New Ulm should re-elect Beussman to another term as mayor.
