FBI report is in; what does it say?

The FBI’s weeklong investigation into allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is in, and as Kavanaugh himself told the Senate, the FBI doesn’t come to conclusions, it just tells you what people said.

So what does the report say? Only a few people know — the White House staff and senators.

GOP senators say the report found no new evidence to back up the allegations of a high school sexual assault. Democrats charge that the investigation is a “sham” that didn’t look far enough for proof.

But, no matter. Now, Democrats say Kavanaugh’s impassioned defense of himself last week shows he lacks the temperament to be a Supreme Court justice. And, they say, he misled them last week.

About what? In response to inane questions about his high school yearbook? About whether he ever vomited after drinking beer?

Enough is enough. This no longer is a circus of the type most people envision. It is one of the sort the Romans staged.

If the FBI found any credible evidence against Kavanaugh, he should not be confirmed.

If it did not, he should be confirmed and sent to the Supreme Court. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has already set the votes in motion for today, which means the final vote could be taken Saturday.

If confirmed, Kavanaugh will join the court under a cloud, just as Justice Clarence Thomas did after being accused of sexual improprieties. Like Thomas, he will just have to keep his head down and do the work to the best of his ability, which remains, as it was before this mess, considerable.
