Getting the U.S. back into space important
Whether President Donald Trump’s recently announced plan to create a new branch of the military, the U.S. Space Force, makes sense is certainly up for debate. Rather than create a whole new military bureaucracy, placing space defense under the Air Force may make more sense. And whether there is anyone up there presenting a military threat is another question.
However, Trump’s emphasis on U.S. superiority outside the atmosphere is prudent — and about eight years overdue.
During former President Barack Obama’s administration, NASA was gutted. Now, our nation has to rely on others, principally Russia, if we want to send people to the International Space Station.
That makes no sense from any standpoint, including national security.
So, whether a U.S. Space Force is in the cards or not, a reinvigorated space program is needed.
