THUMBS UP: With a major gift commitment of $50,000 from the New Ulm Area Foundation on Friday, on top of a major donation from New Ulm Telecom last week, the State Street Theater Company is about halfway to its $500,000 fundraising goal to finance improvements for the theater portion of the old New Ulm Middle School.
This is a project that will help make the State Street Theater an attractive regional center for the performing arts. We salute the New Ulm Area Foundation for providing this great support for the theater.
THUMBS UP: One of the reasons the New Ulm Area Foundation is able to supply that kind of support is the success of its own fundraising efforts, especially its matching challenge that helped put $500,000 more into its endowment.
The effort, “be a part of the MATCH,” originated with a pledge by the Mickelson family trust to donate $250,000 to the Foundation if it could raise another $250,000. Over the last three years, the Foundation has done just that, celebrating its accomplishment a week ago.
The Mickelson family, of course, is descended from Walter K. Mickelson, publisher of The Journal for many decades and a great supporter of New Ulm. We are thankful for his family’s continued support here.
With this addition to the Foundation’s endowment fund, it means that much more money can be spent on support of Art, Education, Historic Preservation and Economic Development.
