Thumbs Up/Down
NUEDC carries on
THUMBS UP: The New Ulm Economic Development Commission is carrying on its work, at least for another year. The group’s board of directors met last week to consider its future in the face of the City of New Ulm ending its subsidy.
The NUEDC will continue its operations, using the $50,000 it will still receive from the New Ulm Public Utilities Commission and other revenue options.
It is important that the NUEDC continue its work for the coming year, since the City of New Ulm will be hiring the assistant city manager who will be doing the economic development work for the city sometime next year. It will take a while for that person to get settled in and become effective at the job.
The NUEDC has been an important part of economic development in New Ulm for many years, and it still has much to offer.
Fire fighters busy
THUMBS UP: New UIm and area firefighters have been busy this past week. On Saturday night, New Ulm firefighters quickly responded to a fire that was apparently set deliberately in an apartment above Kemske Business Products and prevented the fire from doing more damage than it did.
And on Friday, Brown County fire departments from Sleepy Eye, Springfield, Comfrey and the area responded quickly to a barn fire northwest of Sleepy Eye. Again, their quick action helped prevent more damage from happening.
We know it was just Fire Prevention Week, a good time to appreciate your local firefighters, but they could use some appreciation every week of the year.
