Thumbs Up/Down

Madelia progress

Thumbs Up: Hope & Faith Floral and Gifts in Madelia reopened in its newly rebuilt spot this week, leaving only La Plaza Fiesta restaurant as the last of the businesses displaced by last February’s fire to return to downtown Madelia. The restaurant is preparing for the move in the next few weeks, and Madelia’s “rise from the ashes” will be complete.

It is truly a tribute to the human spirit and to community support that all the business owners affected by the fire have reopened and are recovering from last year’s disaster. They could have folded up, taken the insurance payouts, moved on to other things or other places, but they stayed strong with Madelia. Congratulations.

A week at a time

Thumbs Down: The good news is that Congress has approved a government spending bill that will keep the federal government up and running, instead of shutting down for the 100th day of President Trump’s term, but the bad news is that it’s only good for a week. That means another week of threats, counterthreats, demands and denials.

We hope Congressional leaders can start acting like the responsible adults their constituents were hoping they would be and pass a long term spending bill that will allow government to do its work while they do theirs.
