Our View: Sunday liquor sales

The Minnesota House took a “historic vote,” according to House Speaker Kurt Daudt.

“This historic vote brings us one step closer to giving Minnesotans the freedom to buy their favorite beer or wine on any day of the week without government getting in the way,” he said in a press release after the House passed the Sunday liquor sale bill by an 84-45 vote.

It’s not quite the Civil Rights bill, but the issue of being able to buy liquor at liquor stores on Sundays is one Minnesotans have been bringing up year after year in the Legislature.

The Minnesota Senate is set to take a vote on the issue now, after the Senate Commerce Committee passed it on a 7-4 vote Wednesday.

Truly, we don’t see what the fuss is about. Are people really that put out by not being able to purchase liquor on Sunday? Couldn’t they buy enough on Saturday to get them through Sunday?

And do we really need government to tell business people how to run their business? Any business that wants to open on Sunday should be able to. If there is a profit to be made, they will open. If it’s a losing proposition, they can stay closed. If somebody else can make a profit where you can’t, you shouldn’t expect government to stop them.

We’ve said it before: we hope this passes so we don’t have to have this debate again next legislative session.
