Thumbs Up/Down

Madelia Rising

THUMBS UP: The block in downtown Madelia that was destroyed by fire last February is coming back. The rebuilding of the businesses that were destroyed is nearing completion, and this week the first business is reopening in its old spot. The Culligan Water business held its ribbon cutting on Friday, signalling the next chapter in the rebuilding and recovery process. It is a beautiful new building, and if the other businesses in the block are anything like it, this block is going to set a new standard for a small town business district.

Congratulations to Culligan, and to Madelia for its strength and resolve in the face of disaster.

Bloodmobile donors

THUMBS UP: The Red Cross Bloodmobile stopped in New Ulm this week, and the generosity of New Ulm donors stood out again. The blood drive topped its three-day goal of 397 units of blood with 401.

The number of people who receive pins for donating over long periods is also amazing. When someone gets recognition for donating the equivalent of 10, 15 or 20 gallons of blood, it signifies a lifetime of giving, one pint at a time.

These donors deserve all the recognition they can get. After all, one unit of blood can save lives in many different ways. Think of all the lives these long-term donors have saved over the years.

Thanks to them, and all who make the blood drives in New Ulm so successful.
