New year will be what we make it

Today, in many ways, is just like any other that has come and gone. It is 24 hours long, divided into day and night. It is a Sunday and people will be going to church, eating brunch, watching football or whatever they usually do on Sunday.

But it is also the first day of the new year, a day for symbolic change. The new year stretches ahead of us, full of promise. We can just keep doing what we’ve been doing, or we can resolve to do things differently, and do them better. We make resolutions to make ourselves better people, and if we are all successful at that we should be making this a better community, a better country, and a better world.

Of course, the new year is rooted in the past.  Most of the changes coming this year started happening last year. We will have a new president taking office on Jan. 20, for instance, as a result of our November 2016 election. A new Congress and a new Legislature will convene as well. But what they do will depend, in large part, on what we want them to do, and what we lobby them to do. We didn’t finish the work of making 2017 a better year by what we did last year.

If we take this year, a day at a time, and work to make ourselves, and our community, better, we can make 2017 a great year.
