Thumbs Up/Down

Concord Singers

THUMBS UP: Congratulations to the Concord Singers, New Ulm’s Ambassadors of Good Will and purveyors of good old German choral music.

They will be giving their 85th anniversary concert tonight in the brand new New Ulm High School auditorium. It is kind of fitting that one of the longest performing groups in New Ulm will perform during the inaugural year of the auditorium.

The Concords have helped establish New Ulm’s many festivals, and have helped spread New Ulm’s fame far and wide, when they sing at other festivals throughout the state. We’re sure they’ll have no shortage of fans to cheer them on at their concert tonight.

Lights on is good

THUMBS UP: We’re happy to see the power was turned back on at the former New Ulm Middle School, which is now the home of the State Street Theater on the auditorium end and the Centrasota apartment development. But we’re not going to celebrate too soon. The question now is, will the lights stay on? That has been a problem in the past, and we hope it won’t be from here on out.

Hope for a session?

THUMBS UP: Minnesota’s government leaders have a little less time to get a special session done than they have to finish their Christmas shopping. But it sound like they just might possibly make it happen.

Legislative leaders say they are close to a deal with Gov. Mark Dayton on a special session to approve rebates to help Minnesotans facing huge health insurance premium hikes. The session could also include the tax relief bill and public works bill that didn’t make it through the last session. If they can figure everything out (and that’s always the problem) the session could be held around Dec. 20, with plenty of time to wish each other a merry Christmas and have some eggnog before the next legislative session starts in January.
