Town Talk: This July, discover all Park and Rec has to offer

Summer is here, which means it’s time to get out and discover the great things happening at your local parks and recreation centers and parks. This July, explore the “undiscovered” roles of local parks and recreation with New Ulm Park and Recreation as they celebrate Park and Recreation Month, A Lifetime of Discovery.

New Ulm Park and Recreation is celebrating Park and Recreation Month, an initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), by inviting you to explore A Lifetime of Discovery at your local parks and rec. Playgrounds, rec centers, sports leagues, summer camps are just a few of the things that come to mind when we think of parks and rec. But, parks and recreation is so much more than that. During Park and Recreation Month, discover all the ways it can improve quality of life, like science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programming; senior programs; innovative health and wellness opportunities; community celebrations; outdoor education; maintenance; and more.

New Ulm Park and Recreation will celebrate Park and Recreation Month throughout the month of July by providing a weekly photo contest with a winner chosen for each category. Weekly winner will receive Chamber Dollars! The photo contest is easy; simply submit a digital photo discovering one of the wonderful amenities our park and rec system offers (must be on City of New Ulm property). This week (through July 15), the theme is Best Selfie. July 16-22 is Best Action Shot. July 23-29 is Best Nature Shot or Structure. Email digital photo to Joeys@newulmmn.gov by the last date of each weekly contest. Only one photo can be submitted per person each week. All digital files must be 5 megabytes or smaller, in JPEG (.jpg) format and be at least 1,600 pixels wide (horizontal) or tall (vertical). Weekly Chamber Dollar winners will be announced the Monday following the end of each contest. An individual can enter all three contests, however can only win once. By submitting a photo and entering the contest, you agree to allow New Ulm Park and Rec to publicly publish the photos for contest promotion and any other promotional material for future programs, activities or events.

NRPA encourages people that support parks and recreation to share why they think it’s important to explore and discover all New Ulm Park and Rec has to offer with the hashtag #DiscoverJuly.
