Brown County Browser: Minnesota Patience
Minnesotans are known for being “Minnesota Nice.” We greet each other, extend a helping hand when needed, and are known for always being courteous. As of late, I feel we should also be recognized for being “Minnesota Patient.”
During the past five months, many residents have visited our office numerous times to complete a title transfer, registration, or to transfer their specialty plates only to be told that the new license computer system doesn’t have that feature yet, or worse, the system is down statewide. While we can do most registration renewals and title transfers, many times we have to ask for patience from our customer as the new MNLARS system still is unable to perform various types of transactions. If you have been one of these residents, we thank you for your understanding. Our staff is doing “heroic” work, as testified to at a recent Minnesota Senate hearing, navigating the known defects of the program. We await system fixes to ensure we can service all of our residents’ needs. We encourage you to visit our office in person versus mailing in or renewing online. If you renew by mail or internet, our local office does not receive the valuable filing fee we rely on to support the operation of this office.
Information on the new driver’s licenses, that will be available next year, always warrants repeating. Minnesota has received an extension for REAL ID enforcement, allowing Federal agencies to accept driver’s licenses and identification cards from Minnesota at Federal facilities, nuclear power plants and federally regulated commercial aircraft until Oct. 10, 2018. In 2018, more information will be available directing you how we can chose to upgrade your Minnesota license to a Real ID. Your current Minnesota license allows you to fly domestically until October 2018.
A few other items of note: If you are a commercial driver, you are required to submit proof of citizenship with renewal. This would be a certified birth certificate or a valid passport. Remember to submit your health card to us after your physical. This is required to keep your commercial driving privileges current.
As always, please utilize your local offices!
