Town Talk: Information in the city

Town Talk

Editor’s Note: The City of New Ulm presents a weekly column highlighting activities in different departments in the city government. Once a month the city will answer questions from readers. Questions on New Ulm city issues can be sent to comments@ci.new-ulm.mn.us.

How we connect with the world has been rapidly changing over the last twenty years. The City of New Ulm is trying to make changes in how we operate to better serve our residents and customers. We still need The Journal and KNUJ radio to send out information, but lately there has been a shift in our operations to use digital technology. The City of New Ulm has had a website (www.ci.new-ulm.mn.us) for over 10 years, and what was once only available on paper is now digital and accessible 24 hours a day, at no cost!

The City web page has two information tab locations, the first is down the left side of the screen and the second is across the bottom of the picture header. Click on a tab to see all the information that is available for your area of interest. The website provides access to the current City Charter and Ordinances, minutes and agendas, contact information for the City Council, the Public Utilities Commission (PUC), and each city and PUC department. You can sign up for online payments of your utility bill, fill out an assortment of forms from home, and if you want to know where you are supposed to vote, we have that too, in the Elections tab.

You can leave email messages at comments@ci.new-ulm.mn.us , or by clicking the Contact Us tab on the left side, you can contact specific elected, appointed and departmental personnel. Should you have an interest, all employment opportunities with the city or PUC can be accessed at the Employment Opportunities tab, and you will find the new software just implemented this summer that allows you to apply on line for our job postings, from anywhere in the world.

On the top tab list, there are links to the Library, Public Utilities, Park and Recreation, and Community. Some of the links will take you to other web pages. At the Library tab, you can access the Travers des Sioux Library catalog. At the Community tab, you can access the New Ulm Chamber of Commerce web page. The city website may not have everything you are looking for, but it’s darn close!

The City also utilizes Facebook to send out information. The Facebook page names are: City of New Ulm/New Ulm Public Utilities, New Ulm Police Department, New Ulm Park and Recreation, New Ulm Fire Department, New Ulm Public Library, and New Ulm Public Safety. If you aren’t swamped by all this additional information, you can also sign up to receive alerts by email and text on the city website, left side, top tab, Alert Notifications.

OK, so you don’t have a smart phone or computer, we got you covered! Paper is still an option. If you want information from the city or PUC, we can mail you information, you can pick it up at City Hall (100 North Broadway), or since 1876, by telephone! Give us a call (507-359-8233) and we will try and help you out in your quest for information.
