Eagle Update: New year starting for New Ulm Schools

Eagle Update

By Jeff Bertrang

ISD 88 Superintendent

We are nearing the start of another school year for New Ulm Public Schools. Our staff is eager to begin another year, we know that students are excited to reconnect with friends and more importantly, parents are thrilled to have kids back in school!

The start this year is unlike prior years. With four buildings, we have transition grades for students who now attend a new building. On Tuesday, Sept. 5, we will have school for students in first, fifth and ninth grades. This will allow them to meet with their teachers, tour the building, learn about building/hallway/classroom expectations, learn the lunch and locker processes and meet with all specialists. This is a great way to provide support for those students transitioning. On Sept. 6, all students in grades 1-12 will be in school. Kindergarten starts on Sept. 7, allowing two additional days for parent conferences and initial student assessments.

We are excited to add additional Pre-K sessions for both three-year old and four-year old students. Along with the Pre-K, we also added more spaces for our Little Kids Connection at Washington Learning Center. Little Kids Connection provides structured, age appropriate, daycare for the students attending our Pre-K programs. We continue to add capacity to meet family and community needs.

Open houses are scheduled for Aug. 29 and 30 from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. at all of our buildings. Normally these are for parents and students to meet with their teachers and visit with administration. This year, we are extending open house to all community members to see what changes and updates have occurred the past two years. Our schools are community assets and we are thankful of the community support to continue to update and improve them for our students and staff.

We welcome the new staff to our district. We are excited for the contributions that they can provide for our programs and students. New teachers met this week for their two-day district and building orientations. Workshop for all staff starts on Aug. 28.

I wish all schools and students in New Ulm all the best for this school year. I encourage all drivers to be more aware of pedestrians, bicyclists and buses so we don’t have any mishaps. Please be vigilant and safe around all schools and bus zones.
