Given the construction going on in New Ulm today, what can we expect when the MN Dept. of Transportation Highway 14/15 New Ulm Gateway Project starts?

Zachery Tess, Project manager, MNDOT provided us the following information.

The Highway 14/15 New Ulm Gateway Project is expected to begin in 2017 with the majority of work and detours occurring in 2018-2019. The $35 million project will address intersection safety issues, aging bridges, poor pavement conditions, and occasional road flooding. The improvements are: a two lane bridge over Front Street and Minnesota River (capable of being expanded to four lanes when traffic warrants it in the future), a new dual round-a-bout intersection at Highway 14/15 and County Road 21, new round-a-bout intersection at Highway 14/Front Street, reconstruction of 7th North Street (Highway 14) between Broadway and Front Street that includes water and sewer replacement, raising the elevation of Highway 14/15 above flood elevation, a pedestrian/bike trail on the North side of Highway 14 from German Street to the Highway 14/15 interchange, and improved streetscape elements.

The detours associated with this project are split into two phases. The first road closure in 2018 will be from Broadway, North to the Highway 14/15 intersection. The detour will be South down Broadway to 20th South Street/County 37 intersection, then North on County 37, East on Highway 14 to destination, or West on Highway 14 to the Highway 14/15 intersection and North up Highway 15 to destination. Reverse the route if you are going the opposite direction.

The second road closure in 2019 will be from the new round-a-bout at Front Street, North on Highway 15 to the top of the hill in Nicollet County, West on County 21 approximately a quarter of a mile from the Highway 14/15 intersection, and to a point East of the Highway 14/15 intersection approximately 1 mile. As the Highway 14/15 intersection will be under construction, this detour is longer. South down Broadway to 20th South Street, North on 20th South Street/County 37 to the County 37/Highway 14 intersection, East on Highway 14 to County 12 by Courtland, North to the Fort Road/County 5 intersection, and then West to Klossner/Highway 15 intersection. Reverse route if you are going the opposite direction. See maps for construction and detour routes.

While under construction, access to businesses and community festivals will be available! For future information, check out www.mndot.gov/newulm.
