Town Talk: Parking Enforcement 101

Town Talk

Editor’s Note: The City of New Ulm presents a weekly column highlighting activities in different departments in the city government. Once a month the city will answer questions from readers. Questions on New Ulm city issues can be sent to comments@ci.new-ulm.mn.us.

The New Ulm Police Department has Parking Enforcement Officers that monitor and implement the parking ordinances of the City of New Ulm. This includes downtown parking, residential, 24-hour parking and general parking complaints throughout the City of New Ulm. Some of the most common parking prohibitions are as follows:

• On a boulevard or sidewalk;

• In front of, or partially blocking a public or private driveway;

• Within an intersection;

• Within 10 feet of a fire hydrant;

• On a crosswalk;

• Within 20 feet of a crosswalk at any intersection;

• Within 10 feet of a curbside mailbox erected for home or business mail delivery, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on days that mail is delivered;

• At any place where official signs or markings prohibit stopping or parking, or stopping or parking during specified hours;

• It is unlawful for any person to stop, park, or leave standing any vehicle upon any street for a continuous period in excess of 24 hours;

• It is unlawful for any person to leave or park a house trailer, camper, motor home, or recreational vehicle on or within the limits of any street or right of way, except where signs are erected designating the place as a campsite, for more than 12 hours.

Limited time parking is enforced in the downtown business district Monday-Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. In 2015 a new fee schedule was implemented by the New Ulm City Council after being presented by Mayor Robert Beussman. The first time a vehicle is cited for overtime parking, a warning citation is issued. No monetary fee is attached to this warning. The second violation is a $10 fine and the third and subsequent additional violations are $20. Free (unlimited) parking is available on German Street, the movie theater lot, located between Cinema 3 and the Mall, and also the lot behind Anytime Fitness. Courtesy parking passes are offered and can be received by calling Parking Enforcement at 233-6750. The City of New Ulm has leased parking stalls available. Calling City Hall at 359-8261 to make an inquiry as to the availability and cost of a leased stall.

Winter parking can be a challenge if you live or work in the downtown area. Notification of a Downtown Snow Emergency will be announced through KNUJ AM 860, BRAT FM 107.3 or on your local cable television access channel. Residents can call the Snow Emergency Hotline at 233-8433.

Parking, unfortunately, is something that many people deal with on a daily basis. Parking Enforcement Officers are probably not the most popular residents in a City but try to remember they are just doing a job! For any questions call the Police Department at 233-6750.
